Meet the Americans who can't retire
  + stars: | 2024-03-23 | by ( Juliana Kaplan | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +12 min
More people over 65 are working as pensions disappear, people live longer, and Social Security benefits are seemingly always in peril. Business Insider spoke with several Americans of retirement age about why they are still trading their time for money. "I think older people become very invisible, and maybe it's going to take other older people to help heighten that visibility." On average, Americans who have pensions receive $25,000 annually from them; the average estimated annual Social Security benefit is $38,418 for 2024. Indeed, BI's analysis of retirement data has found that nearly 80% of retirees have Social Security income.

To the Editor:Re “Could Long Covid Be the Senate’s Bipartisan Cause?,” by Zeynep Tufekci (column, Feb. 20):Like one of the people you interviewed, I, too, was an “Energizer bunny” before I contracted Covid. However, two active Covid infections within three months — in June and August of 2022 — left me virtually bedridden with long Covid for 18 months. To add insult to injury, there are too many dismissive doctors who treat long Covid in an ineffective manner and believe that long Covid is largely a psychological issue. We need strong, consistent funding and relentless, targeted research to identify effective diagnostic testing and successful therapies. We need to require insurance companies to fund experimental or off-label usage of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals (food products with health benefits).

Read previewMy dad is almost 100. My dad went from living with his parents to living with his wife. AdvertisementIt's the first time he's lived aloneFor starters, my folks were self-described Luddites. His forward-thinking primary care doctor has him on an exhaustive supplement regimen and very few prescription medications, which may be one reason he's lived so well for so long. While my dad likes to say he's "a 20th century man in a 21st century world," he's done a pretty good job of keeping up.

One of the most difficult conversations you can have in life is with a parent or peer who is becoming too old and infirm to work. Whether the infirmity is physical or mental, often your loved one is the last person to realize his own deficiencies, so he may interpret respectful, genuine concern as a personal attack. This conversation is difficult enough when it’s conducted entirely in private with friends and family. It’s infinitely more difficult when it plays out in public and involves the president of the United States. The top-line conclusion of the special counsel Robert Hur’s report regarding the discovery of classified information at Joe Biden’s home is good for the president.

London CNN —King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer and has started treatment in London. Specific medical conditions of members of the royal family are rarely divulged publicly. Andrew Parsons/Kensington PalaceQueen Camilla has been undertaking a full program of public duties in recent weeks, with that expected to continue. Now, 11 members of the clan conduct royal duties - more than half of whom are over the age of 70. Under the Regency Act 1937, that would be the next in line to the throne, which is Prince William.

All three officers received suspended prison sentences. “It’s a decision ... that we take as a victory,” said Antoine Vey, Luhaka’s lawyer, according to the daily Le Monde. The incident was followed by a week of protests in suburbs around Paris, many degenerating into violence. In the case of Théo Luhaka, Le Monde reported that Castelain, the officer who used the “telescopic baton,” was also banned from carrying a weapon or patrolling the streets for five years. The other two officers received similar bans for two years.

“An osteobiography uses all available evidence to reconstruct an ancient person’s life,” said lead study author John Robb, a professor at Cambridge University, in a statement. “Our team used techniques familiar from studies such as Richard III’s skeleton, but this time to reveal details of unknown lives — people we would never learn about in any other way.”An illustration shows a typical marketplace in medieval Cambridge. Mark Gridley/After the PlagueThe bone biographies are available on Cambridge University’s After the Plague project website. Together, the bones tell a collective story about a cross section of people living in medieval Cambridge and the hardships they faced. “Everyday diseases, such as measles, whooping cough and gastrointestinal infections, ultimately took a far greater toll on medieval populations,” Robb said.

Bone bite marks reveal dinosaur predator-prey dynamics

But in general, predators probably steered well clear of them," Hone added. But they were dwarfed by adult sauropods reaching perhaps 50 tons. Bites were detected on sauropod bones belonging to Camarasaurus, Galeamopus and Suuwassea as well as bones probably but not definitively belonging to Diplodocus, Apatosaurus and Brachiosaurus. The fact that theropods appear to have avoided hunting adult sauropods does not mean sauropods were not on the menu. The researchers noticed high levels of wear on fossilized teeth of theropods that did not correspond to the rarity of bites on adult sauropod bones.

That should be no surprise considering that a consistent proponent of this inquiry was former President Donald Trump. I make that judgment based on my work as a scholar of impeachment and also as a practitioner who helped lead the first Trump impeachment and trial as counsel to the House Judiciary Committee. McCarthy bitterly — and now hypocritically — criticized former Speaker Nancy Pelosi for announcing the first Trump impeachment before a vote (she later scheduled one). That includes examples like the inquiry into President Richard Nixon and the second Trump impeachment. The proposed Biden impeachment is a revenge mission and nothing more.

But I don’t think we’re all aware of the age beliefs. To do that, researchers like him are targeting the essential biology of aging – the underlying reasons why we get old. When those biological processes fail or break down, we get sick – and aging is the biggest risk factor for that deterioration. In the meantime, though, remember this: Aging is probably not nearly as bad as you might imagine. And as my mom told me, we should all truly embrace getting older, because it sure as heck beats the alternative.

The consensus, according to two people familiar with the responses given to Democratic operatives, was that persuadable voters believe Fetterman is fit to serve and getting sharper. Four months after the stroke, Fetterman has not released his medical records. But Oz has made sure that Fetterman’s health problems remain a top topic of political conversation. Michelle Gustafson / Bloomberg via Getty ImagesEarlier this summer, Pennsylvania Democrats privately expressed concerns about Fetterman’s health and lack of transparency, but Fetterman seems to have eased their fears. That helps explain why Republicans have been split on how much to focus on Fetterman’s health.
